Major $28 million Brannon Road expansion begins in Jessamine County
Construction is beginning on a major improvement project for Brannon Road in Jessamine County that will reshape one of the region's busiest corridors, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced recently.
The $28 million project will expand approximately 3.21 miles of Brannon Road (KY 1980) between U.S. 68 and U.S. 27 with significant safety and capacity improvements. The work includes widening the road to three lanes with a center two-way left turn lane, constructing a roundabout at Clays Mill Road and building a new bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad.
KYTC District 7, which serves 12 central Kentucky counties including Jessamine, said initial construction will focus on the railroad bridge embankment. Most work is expected during daytime hours, with periodic flagging operations as the project begins. Major traffic impacts and lane closures are not expected immediately, though motorists should expect periodic disruptions as work progresses.
The project is designed to address congestion on a corridor that handles well over 7,000 vehicles daily. The current roadway infrastructure dates back 70 to 80 years and has been strained by growth in the region, particularly from retail development and population increases in surrounding areas. The project completion is expected in November 2028.
Beyond widening, the improvements will include bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, reflecting broader transportation planning to serve growing communities in Jessamine and Fayette counties. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet notes all traffic impacts will be announced in advance as work progresses.
Motorists are urged to slow down and exercise caution in work zones. All work and closures are scheduled on a tentative basis and subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors beyond the Cabinet's control. For traffic updates, drivers can visit GoKY.ky.gov.
