LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a work session on June 18 to consider the first draft of an updated Downtown Area Master Plan, discuss proposed solar energy regulations, and review updates to local development codes.

The session, which begins at 1:30 p.m. ET in the Phoenix Building, will feature presentations on five planning initiatives, according to the official agenda. The downtown plan represents the first comprehensive update to the city's development vision in 60 years, with MKSK serving as the lead consultant to guide growth and revitalization of the downtown core.

The Solar Work Group will present its recommendations for revised zoning ordinance language governing solar energy systems. The updated rules would align with Lexington's goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, as outlined in the Comprehensive Plan, and would position the city as a "SolSmart Community," a designation for solar energy leaders.

The commission will also receive informational briefings on the Unified Development Code update, for which the city has contracted with planning consultant Tunnel, Spangler, Walsh and Associates for completion by June 30, 2027. A Complete Streets Manual presentation will discuss design standards for pedestrian-friendly roadways, and a separate agenda item will address an asphalt art pilot project on Shropshire Avenue.

Unlike a full council meeting, work sessions are designed for discussion and information-sharing, with formal votes typically deferred. The Planning Commission meets regularly to advise the Urban County Council on land use and development matters.
