LEXINGTON, Ky. — Head coach Mark Pope said the Kentucky basketball team has shown significant progress during six weeks of summer practice, expressing optimism about the 2026-27 roster as offseason training concludes.

"We couldn't be more excited," Pope said Friday during a media availability. "We just finished week six of summer. The guys are growing together. They're starting to understand what we're trying to accomplish and they're making terrific strides."

Pope praised the depth and versatility of his roster, highlighting how players have stepped up when others missed time during the summer conditioning program. "I love our roster right now. I like the way the pieces fit. I like the versatility of our guys," he said. "I think we have depth because we have versatility."

Concerns about the team's defensive capabilities have circulated during the offseason, but Pope believes the squad possesses the ingredients to be disruptive on that end of the floor. "We were a good defensive team last year. We were a top 30 defensive team," Pope noted. "This team doesn't have the known commodity like an Otega Oweh or a Mo Dioubate that were known as elite level defensive players. What we do have is a bunch of high IQ guys with a ton of length. Length is our strength."

After dealing with point guard injuries in his first two seasons — with Lamont Butler sidelined two seasons ago and Jaland Lowe missing nearly all of last season — Pope expressed confidence in his current crop of ball handlers. He singled out lead guards Zoom Diallo, Alex Wilkins and Mason Williams for praise.

Pope highlighted Diallo's work ethic, noting the guard practiced while dealing with illness and was in the gym at 6:15 a.m. the following day. "When you have a lead guard like that, you get pretty excited," Pope said.

The Kentucky basketball program, which finished 22-14 last season before losing to Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament, is preparing for the 2026-27 campaign with high expectations following a roster overhaul in the offseason.
