LEXINGTON, Ky. — Outfielder Jayce Tharnish announced he will return to the University of Kentucky for his senior season, according to UK Athletics. The move comes after Tharnish was widely expected to be selected in the 2026 MLB Draft, making him the second Wildcat draft prospect to commit to returning in 2027, joining first baseman Hudson Brown.

Tharnish, a transfer from St. Bonaventure University in Pennsylvania, delivered a breakout season in his first year competing in the Southeastern Conference. The center fielder started all 56 games and led the Wildcats with a .351 batting average, 84 hits, 64 runs scored, 13 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 38 RBIs. He posted a .918 on-base plus slugging percentage and stole 32 bases in 34 attempts, demonstrating the elite speed and defensive prowess that made him a coveted prospect.

Tharnish's 84 hits ranked as the fourth-most by a Kentucky player during head coach Nick Mingione's 10 seasons at the helm. His .993 fielding percentage reflected nearly flawless defense in center field, and he finished with 121 total bases, tied for the team lead. Over his college career, Tharnish has recorded 200 hits and stolen 68 bases in 71 attempts.

Tharnish's return provides significant continuity for a Wildcats program coming off an appearance in the College World Series, where Mingione has established Kentucky as a national powerhouse. The decision comes as other draft-eligible players, including infielder Ethan Hindle, have yet to announce their plans for the 2027 season.
