LEXINGTON, Ky. — Morgan Gaerte has the opportunity many college athletes never get: a chance to make an immediate impact at one of the nation's premier volleyball programs.

The transfer from Notre Dame is stepping into perhaps the most demanding role on the Kentucky volleyball team, replacing Eva Hudson, who led the Wildcats to the 2025 NCAA championship match before exhausting her eligibility.

Gaerte, a former All-ACC performer, had a breakout 2025 season with the Irish, recording 497 kills and earning AVCA honorable mention All-American accolades. Now at Kentucky, she has already demonstrated her value by earning recognition as one of five Wildcats named to the AVCA Preseason Player of the Year watch list, alongside returning veterans Brooklyn DeLeye, Kassie O'Brien and Molly Tuozzo.

Head coach Craig Skinner brought Gaerte in through the transfer portal with a specific role in mind: moving her from outside hitter at Notre Dame to right side. The positional change has been seamless, according to Gaerte, who appreciated the opportunity to expand her game with more blocking and defensive responsibilities.

"The culture is so, so strong," Gaerte said in her first spring practices. "Obviously, we're going for 10 consecutive SEC championships this year."

Kentucky was picked by SEC coaches to win the league for what would be a decade of consecutive regular season titles. The Wildcats will face a challenging schedule, including a national championship rematch against Texas A&M on Oct. 25 at Memorial Coliseum.

Though young in her Kentucky tenure, Gaerte has quickly found her leadership role on a roster featuring experienced seniors. "There's leadership already on this team with these seniors," she said. "I think everyone is on the same page, so I think that's something that makes us stand out from other teams."

While the accolades are appreciated, Gaerte knows preseason recognition means little if Kentucky doesn't deliver on the court. "It's obviously a really good pat on the back but at the end of the day, it doesn't mean a whole lot," she said. "I think there's a lot to prove this season."
