Urban County Council tackles zoning changes, fire truck purchase
LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council is scheduled to consider ordinances and resolutions that would authorize equipment purchases, expand a development financing district, and make administrative changes to local boards during its Thursday meeting.
The council agenda includes second reading votes on multiple resolutions, which typically precede final approval. Among the items is a $1.3 million fire apparatus, to be purchased from Atlantic Emergency Solutions, Inc. at a cost not to exceed $1,343,000. The council would also consider authorizing a $688,040.56 contract for Wilson Downing Intersection Improvements following three competitive bids.
The agenda includes first reading of an ordinance to abolish the Opioid Abatement Commission, which has been meeting monthly to discuss how to manage Lexington's Opioid Abatement Settlement Funds. Over the next 16 years, Lexington will receive yearly payments that will total $14,332,969 from litigation against large opioid manufacturers and distributors.
Another first-reading item would expand the Red Mile Development Area, part of a tax increment financing project that allows developers to apply a portion of newly generated taxes to pay for a project's public infrastructure. A public hearing on the expansion is scheduled for June 4, 2026 at 6 p.m.
The agenda also includes zoning changes for three properties: Country Club Drive, Clays Mill Road near a Baptist church, and East High Street. The council would consider authorizing a partnership with Emergent to supply nasal Narcan spray for overdose prevention at a cost not to exceed $98,175, as well as agreements with downtown organizations for public events and park improvements.
