FCPS Summer Programs Offer Diverse Academic, Arts Opportunities
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Fayette County Public Schools is keeping students engaged and learning throughout the summer months through a diverse array of academic and enrichment programs, Acting Superintendent Bill Bradford told the school board on June 22.
Bradford highlighted several initiatives designed to ensure that progress continues uninterrupted during the break from the traditional school calendar. Extended school services operating at Ashland Elementary and Bryan Station Middle School are providing students with additional academic support, while multilingual students in the migrant and refugee programs have access to extra academic opportunities.
High school students are earning dual college credit in mathematics courses while participating in athletic camps, according to Bradford's report. The district is also partnering with community organizations to expand learning beyond the classroom.
Through the Toyota Driving Possibilities program, Bryan Station High School is hosting an Academy Explorers Camp for elementary students in grades 4-5. The YMCA is offering a Power Scholars camp, while the University of Kentucky is hosting a STEM-focused camp specifically for Winburn Middle students. The Driving Possibilities initiative focuses on career readiness and STEM education for students across the district's feeder pattern.
The district's cultural programming is also thriving. Nearly 80 high school students from across FCPS are performing in the third annual summer musical production, "Seussical," which opens June 26 at Frederick Douglass High School and runs through June 28. Additionally, FCPS will host its summer high school graduation ceremony on June 29, also at Douglass, and continues to provide free meals to students through the USDA's SUN Meals program weekdays through July 24.
The breadth of summer offerings underscores the district's commitment to maintaining educational momentum during the school break while addressing different student interests and needs.
