LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will temporarily close Leestown Road (U.S. 421) overnight on June 16-17 to support bridge construction on the New Circle Road widening project, according to a press release from KYTC District 7.

The closures will begin at 10 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, and reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 17. Both directions of Leestown Road will be closed under the New Circle Road (KY 4) overpass between mile markers 1.9 and 1.7, affecting motorists in both the northbound and southbound lanes. The work is specifically for bridge deck construction on the New Circle Road overpass above Leestown Road.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes during the closure. The Cabinet recommends using New Circle Road to access Georgetown Road (U.S. 25) or Old Frankfort Pike (KY 1681) instead of passing directly under the overpass. Motorists should watch for signage and construction personnel in the work area.

This closure is part of a larger $170 million infrastructure improvement effort called Driving Lexington Progress, which aims to increase capacity and improve safety and travel times in Lexington's rapidly growing area. When the overall project is completed in 2027, New Circle Road will be widened and the Leestown Interchange will be converted to a Double Crossover Diamond design, similar to the interchange at Harrodsburg Road. The double crossover diamond design has been proven to reduce crashes and improve traffic flow.
